Finding Your Therapist
Many people ask for recommendations on finding a therapist. Below is a short and sweet list of considerations.
1.) Know what you need. Have a sense of what is bringing you to therapy. What is it that you need to work on?
2.) Try out more than one therapist. Never be afraid to attend a session to find out how it feels to work with a therapist. Are you comfortable around them? Are they attentive in a way that makes sense to you? Do you feel heard and understood? Do you get a sense of how they work? Do they specialize in an area that will serve you?
3.) Be transparent. When a therapist solicits feedback, they want to know how things went. Try to communicate what worked and what did not. This will give you a sense of how communication works between you and your therapist and you will be able to see how they react to feedback.
4.) Discuss money up front. The cost of therapy can be prohibitive. It can be hard to find a therapist that is within your budget. Early on, talk with your therapist if you have financial constraints. Many therapists provide sliding scale services, or can refer you to a clinician within your budget.
